God’s Promises for Boys

by Jack Countryman & Amy Parker. I received this book free for review from Thomas Nelson’s BookSneeze program.

A little devotional book specifically geared towards young boys. The book is very cute visually – the illustrations are fun and the design is pleasing. My son is only 2 and a half and this book was not able to capture his understanding yet – but he liked the pictures.

This book addresses a range of topics from “God’s promises when.. you want to be cool” to “God wants you to… influence your world” to “God’s promises about Jesus… He is your protector.” Each topic is followed by a little poem and 2-5 verses from the Bible. The verses are excellent. The poems are not. Each poem is 4 lines – they are cheesy. Take for example, under “God’s promises when… you are tempted to do the wrong thing” :  The smell of fresh cookies fills the air, But you remember Mom saying “Don’t!” So when a sneaky voice says, “Yes, you can,” Make sure your reply is “I won’t!”

This book could be a good resource if I don’t want to take the trouble to find verses myself, but I was hoping for more. I think this might be one of those books that looks like a really cute and nice gift, but ends up sitting on the shelf.
