Crafty Christmas – Lucy’s Beer Cap Checkers

This present took me the longest to decide on. I couldn’t possibly do anything too girly for Lucy, but I didn’t want to make something boyish either. I was a little worried about whether she would like it, but the smile on her face makes me think she did!

I found an awesome tutorial for travel checkers, and using it as a (very loose) guide, made this cute little checker game board and pieces bag. I made the checkered part of the game board pretty much how the tutorial taught, then mixed it up by doing a white back with a few fabric flower shapes appliqued on.

A simple draw string bag with twine holds the game pieces. Originally I was thinking of using buttons, then maybe some baked clay pieces, but eventually settled on beer bottle caps. Good beer. I figured that if she loses any game pieces, her dad can replenish them by enjoying a good brew.

The cool thing about fabric gifts is that simply changing the fabric can give it a totally different vibe, and change it up for a different person. How awesome is that.
